It is time to begin the long winter's reflection on the garden, the beauty and peace it gave to me in these uncertain times. Also, to reflect on what is next. So many projects were completed this year. Capturing the space at the north of the house for the Barney Yard and Garden. A 50 X 90 ft yard for Barney to be able to run and play in. The log house was completely log oiled ( a job that needs to be done about every 3-4 years), the fences were painted and the garage was stained. A new deck landing and door was placed on the west side of the garage, mainly so Barney can play in the yard and then come sit with us as we have our beverages and snacks, and so he has an entry to the garage during the cold times to sit by the wood stove in the workshop and more projects are completed. The drive ways were regraveled and all the walkways received new washed gravel. Some needed landscaping projects were finished, 11 new azaela bushes were planted and garden benches were built and placed in the back meadow. Wildflower seeds were planted in the meadow...4 lbs worth...crocus, daffodils, tulips and hyacinth was planted in all the border.
I discovered a BBC show Gardeners' World that is just fantastic, and I recommend it to everyone. While filmed in the UK, many of the plantings, suggestions and their segment "Jobs for the Weekend" match up with what is happening in Western Montana. The show runs from about March to October. They take a break over the winter months.
Plans for Spring
Build a Garden Shed- I am not in need of storage and a place to work on potting projects. A 12X16ft building should be just what I need. Construction will begin as soon and the snows have melted.
Platform for viewing the stars and for chamber music performances in the Barney Yard. This platform will sit at the western end of the Barney yard and at night the view of the Milky Way should be incredible! Shooting stars and Planets are a sure thing. Christmas purchase of a telescope is the plan!
Just east of the platform is the Barney Yard.
A large expanse that slopes up to the garage...a perfect place for audience seating on lawn chairs or blankets. Early evening concerts should be just lovely, and deck and porch seating should round out a perfect garden concert event. The platform should hold horn quartets, woodwind quintets, string quartets and the like. Looking forward to planning that early spring.
Continued expansion of the gardens is always on the schedule! I am excited to try zone 5 plantings as with global warming, I am finding that the season is warmer, and a bit longer. Refirbishing some of the older gardens (some are 20 years old) is also in the 2021 plans.
Winter pictures will be posted on the Blog as there are some spectacular blue skies and deep white snows in the garden. It is a different type of beauty.
And the birds come..100s and 100s of birds.
The garden blog will come alive with more of a "bird garden"!
