September Days in the Garden

Last of the beans, tomatoes and peppers from the garden, and final touches happening this weekend on the garage deck— turning out to be a viewing platform for Barney. Painting door green and finishing staining of garage and deck in process...slowed down by smoke.

Deck made with reclaimed wood, left over building materials from construction projects and conduit pipe railing. A “rustic, industrial, cattle gate” design created on the fly with recycled materials. Perfect Pandemic Project to end the summer.

Besides the smoke coming in from the California wildfires, these days are cooler and fall is in the air.  And a final sign of late summer...a Painful wasp sting! Swollen hand from the sting and an allergic reaction of ear swelling and congestion lasted about 5 days. Birds are migrating out of Seeley and winter birds are flocking in. Very active garden these days!

Winter does not slow down in the garden. The roses and other perennials go to bed and are covered with 4 feet of snow.  But 100s of birds visit the feeders. 2 species of chickadees, 2 species of nuthatches, Northern flickers, 3 species of woodpeckers—including the giant Piliated, Steller’s Jays, Canada Jays...and a shock to us last winter..Eastern Blue Jays!! A family of 3 came every day to eat peanuts. I could actually identify each bird, with the smallest, who I called Billie. Hope they remember their winter home this year!

Winter arrived.....for only a few hours!

Today the temps dropped down to 26 degrees and tomorrow, it might be the same story.  However we will see a return to 70s and 80s for the next 10-14 days.  So, the bulk of the flowers came inside last night and flower tubs were covered to save as much as we could.  I do love fall...so I hope that we do get some of that weather.  Heading straight into winter and snow is not my favorite thing!  Still time for final projects which included:

Finishing deck landing

Getting rid of a soccer sized hornets nest

Final mulching of front yard beds

Bringing in Geraniums for the winter

Enjoying some beautiful sunsets on the new landing

Made it to September! Fall is coming...

September 1st and the garden is still alive and well.  Nights are dramatically cooler, but the days are warm and sunny.  Geraniums, petunias, black-eyed susans, cone flowers, bee balm are giving it their all.  I am pleased that all of the geraniums I overwintered are showing their gratitude!  Stunning display.  So, I will try to bring in most of the geraniums this winter as well making room for a Geranium Garden in the basement.  Pics to follow with that new garden area. We are looking at rearranging furniture, adding racks and selves and grow lights to enhance the SW sun that warms up that part of the room.

So, enjoy some September flowers!
